Dr. Carlson teaches graduate courses in computer graphics and visualization,
as well as the Department's Orientation to Graduate Studies seminar.
He also has joint appointments in Art, Art Education, and Computer Science
and Engineering. He has overseen research grants from such diverse sources
as NASA, the National Science Foundation, Harvard University, the U.S.
Department of Education and other industries and foundations. Widely
published in computer graphics journals, Professor Carlson is currently
writing a book related to the history of computer graphics and animation
and is continuing to develop and maintain a comprehensive online historical
resource in this area at http://design.osu.edu/carlson/cghistory.
He has been nominated for three Clio awards for excellence in producing
and directing computer-generated advertisements and television promotions,
and has also received honors from the International Film and
TV Festival of New York and the Broadcast Promotion and Marketing Executives. Dr.
Carlson's professional experience has been in the advertising and computer
animation industry, and he has taught math, computer science, and design
at Idaho State University, Hope College, Denison University and Ohio
State. He
actively serves on several boards, most notably the advisory board for
OSU's Rare Books and Manuscripts, the technology advisory board for Reservoir
Venture Partners, and as a Trustee on the Grandview Heights/Marble Cliff
Historical Society, for which he also has designed and maintains their
web site at ghmchs.org.
