R. Brian Stone teaches Visual
Communication in the Department of Industrial, Interior and Visual Communication
Design.A practicing designer, his work has garnered numerous awards
for design excellence, usability, and user satisfaction. Professor Stone’s
research is concerned with the creation of screen-based forms that enable
interaction. These forms are manifested into products such as web sites,
interactive CD-ROMs, multimedia presentations, and kinetic typographic
messages. He is the author of several articles on the subject and has
presented his research at several international venues including the
University of London, University of Tampere, Finland, Beijing University
of Aeronautics (P.R.China), and University of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
He was the keynote speaker at the 2003 Apple Art and Design Conference
(Cranbrook Academy) and his article on screen-based interface design
was selected as one of the “Best Papers” at the 2002 IDSA
National Education Conference.
Student projects evolving from Professor
Stone’s teaching have
collected numerous awards including Judge’s Choice Awards at the
2002 and 2004 CSCA Creative Best, AIGA’s LOOP Competition for Interactive
Design, and the West Virginia Flash Animation Festival.
Most recently,
Apple Computer has recognized Professor Stone as one of the top educational
technology leaders in the country (Apple Distinguished Educator). He
is also a recipient of the 2002 Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching
from The Ohio State University and serves on the Executive Council
for the Academy of Teaching.
