Undergradute Research in the Department of Design

The Department of Design strongly encourages research projects for advanced undergraduates. A number of opportunities for such projects are available each year.

Featured Research Projects

On-screen media messages are becoming more layered and complex for the user and designer. Although it has been shown that the introduction of motion adds interest to a message, the exact mechanisms to enhance meaning via motion and the appropriate usages of motion remain elusive to many. Using established stimuli, the current study promotes the principles of meaningful, expressive typography and the methods of engaging motion graphics. The Ohio State University Professor Brian Stone and undergraduate student Mason Harding demonstrated the principles in an easily understood overview of effective motion type design practice with a guide that provides a clear demonstration of how the meaning of a message can be enhanced through the addition of animated motion [more here]

The Ohio State University Professor Carolina Gill and undergraduate student Mindi Davis defined the ePortfolio as a design problem, analyzing the context, user, and objectives by applying design methodology to its development. The specific subject is the Professor's academic portfolio and its context. [more here]

Departmental Scholarships and Awards
Recognition of outstanding undergraduate research in the Department is accomplished in a number of different ways. One of these is the awarding of prizes and scholarships. Undergraduate awards in the Department of Design include the Wallschleger Award, the Pyne Scholarship, the John Jay Scholarship, and the Fergus-Gillmore Scholarship. More information about these awards can be found [here]. Students should also be aware that there are many awards and scholarships available through the College of the Arts.

Faculty Research Interests
Students who choose to engage in research outside the confines of the classroom normally do so under the supervision of one of the Department’s professors. These faculty members represent a large variety of different research interests in the various fields of Design. Before undertaking an independent research project, students will want to consult the list of [Faculty Profiles] to determine which professor’s interests coincides with their own.

Research Resources

Denman Undergraduate Research Forum
All students involved in a significant research project are encouraged to investigate the [Denman Undergraduate Research Forum]. The Forum provides a means for undergraduate students to share their research with members and friends of the OSU community; recognizes the significant contributions to research by OSU undergraduates; and facilitates exchange between students, faculty, and the public.
