Grade Forgiveness

Effective autumn semester 2015 students can petition to repeat a course and if approved use the grade of this course to replace the first in the calculation of the student’s cumulative GPA. There are conditions that must be met in order to submit a petition:

  • The student must have earned a letter grade (A-E) in the course to be forgiven.
  • The student must not have previously repeated the course to be forgiven.
  • The student must not have already used the Grade Forgiveness rule for three or more courses.
The petition to use the Grade Forgiveness rule must be submitted in consultation with the student’s academic advisor to the college of enrollment by the Fourth Friday of the term in which they will repeat the course. Approvals will be processed and added to student records after the Tenth Friday of the term.

Most Design courses are only offered once per academic year, therefore election to enact the Grade Forgiveness Rule on Design courses may SEVERELY alter your degree plan. You should consult with an Academic Advisor about this option.

Keep in mind that students considering applying to graduate or professional schools, or even to other colleges at Ohio State, all earned grades will be considered (including those forgiven under the Grade Forgiveness Rule) in the admissions process. The other college or unit may recalculate the original grade(s) into a student's cumulative GPA.

Students should fill out and submit the online Grade Forgiveness petition form located on the University Registrar's website (registrar.osu.edu/students/current.asp/) if they are requesting to use the Grade Forgiveness Rule when repeating a course. Students must complete and submit the form by the deadline of the term in which they are repeating the course. Those deadlines are:

  • The fourth Friday for courses lasting an entire semester or twelve-week summer term
  • The first Friday for four-week session courses
  • The second Friday for session courses longer than four weeks
Submitted forms will be reviewed for eligibility in the student's college office, and students will be notified of the decision. If a request is approved, the grade for the first time the student took the course will be "forgiven" after the tenth Friday of the term.
