Non-Freshman & Transfer Students

Non-Freshman and Non-Design Students

Requests are reviewed annually, January 02 to April 30.

Any student who did not attempt to enter the first-year foundation course sequence for their freshmen year at Ohio State may petition to be selected for the first-year sequence for the next academic year. This also applies to non-freshman students transferring to main campus from a regional campus or from another institution of higher learning where they were not studying with in a formal design related degree program or have not yet completed 18 or more semester credit hours in Art, Design, Architecture, or Engineering specific coursework. Please be aware that only a small number of selections will be offered to such students, as the majority of selections will be reserved for incoming, first-year students.

Please also be aware that the sequence of courses for all Design major programs is four years in length. Any student who did not attempt to enter the first-year foundation course sequence for their freshmen year will have another four years of mandatory course work in a major program, should they be accepted to the first-year sequence for the next academic year.

Non-freshman students who wish to petition for consideration of possible acceptance to the first-year foundation course sequence for the next academic year should complete the "Pre-Design Petition" in the menu to the right. This form is available from January 01 to April 30. Outside of this timeframe, Pre-Design Petitions are not accepted..

Please be prepared that the Pre-Design Petition will ask you for a Statement of Intent expressing why you are interested in leaving your current academic program in favor of a Bachelor of Science in Design major program at Ohio State. (1500 characters max.) It is a good idea to prepare this in advance, as the petition form will not allow you to save and return to a submission.

Students will be alerted in May via email from a representative of the Department of Design concerning acceptance or non-acceptance to the first-year sequence for the next academic year.

Transfer Students Currently Studying in a Design Related Degree Program

Requests are reviewed annually, January 01 to April 01.

Any student who has begun an undergraduate design major program from a recognized, peer institution of higher learning and has completed 18 or more semester credit hours in Art, Design, Architecture, or Engineering specific coursework may request to be considered for acceptance to an Ohio State Design major program at a level higher than the first-year.

Transferring students who wish to petition for consideration of possible acceptance to an Ohio State Design major program at a level higher than the first-year should complete the "BSD Program Petition" form in the menu to the right. This form is available from January 02 to April 01. Outside of this timeframe, BSD Program Petitions will not be accepted.

  2. Current design-related major and Current Institution of Higher Learning.

  3. Intended Ohio State Design Major.

The BSD Program Petition for will also ask the student to submit a portfolio of project outcomes from the student's current program courses. That work will be reviewed by our major program faculty members, who will determine if its quality warrants placement in a level higher than the first year.

Portfolios should include:

  1. Syllabi and assignments sheets related to projects shown (translated into English if applicable).

  2. Process work (research, sketches, etc.) and finished project work.

  3. Current Transcript or Advising Report with Cumulative GPA and Design course Grades.

All items should be neatly organized in a physical manner. PDF portfolios may be provided via email, but must be reduced to a memory size appropriate for screen display (10mb maximum file size).

Students will be alerted during the month of April concerning the Department's decision related to a request for consideration for a major program at a level higher than the first-year, for the following academic year starting in August. This alert with come via email from a representative of the Department of Design.

Please note that the Department of Design typically accepts a full group of major program students each academic year via the annual entrance review process. Therefore, it may not be possible to place a transfer student in an existing, advanced group of students if no places are available. In such cases, the only possibility may be for consideration of acceptance to the first-year foundation course sequence for the next academic year.
