Ohio State Design Student Work Featured at Google Partnership Event
On September 29, The Ohio State University and Google announced a partnership aimed at accelerating research in a range of fields through access to numerous computing capabilities and Google’s DeepMind.
Ohio State’s collaboration with Google will accelerate the modernization of campus operations by leveraging AI models and agents in support of the university’s academic and research mission while enabling intelligent campus infrastructure, cybersecurity automation, and administrative efficiency.
Michael Hardesty, App Development Director of the Emerging Technology Studio in the College of Arts and Sciences, invited the Department of Design to exhibit material and digital projects at the Energy Advancement and Innovation Center (EAIC) on Kenny Rd, where the partnership was publicly announced.
With just a week to gather projects and prepare, Department of Design faculty Amanda Huynh, Will Nickley, Rebekah Matheny, Yvette Shen, and Scott Swearingen rallied students from sophomore to seniors to graduates from our four majors and gathered 23 prototypes and material projects to be exhibited onsite. Students exhibiting work were invited to attend the exclusive event, where Ohio State President Ravi V. Bellamkonda and Vice-President of Research John Horack shared inspiring words about the future of collaboration and innovation.
Assistant Professor Gaëtan Robillard also showcased his students' work, including a series of 8 creative coding projects, and presented his research. He exhibited the Color Data Sphere, an interactive visualization resulting from a study on generative AI datasets. Built for the classroom, it opens new avenues for research in AI aesthetics.
“I am thrilled for our design students to be given a chance to showcase their work at such a high visibility event. Good design fuels innovation, and potential partnerships with Google DeepMind for our design students and faculty is a unique opportunity to explore new creative endeavors on campus” said Fabienne Münch, Chair of the Department of Design.
