Ohio State Design relies on the generous support of our donors to make many things possible for our students and faculty. Your giving supports student scholarships and awards, visiting designers, student research and travel, our technology inventory, and many other enriching experiences. Please consider making a gift today.
Those wishing to support the Department of Design may do so through the following gift funds, administered by The Ohio State University Foundation.
Department of Design Discretionary Fund
Supports the department of design at the discretion of the department chair.
Department of Design Research Fund
Supports undergraduate research projects in the Department of Design. Expenditures approved by the department chair or their designee.

Other Department Initiatives
The Annual Reinhart Butter and Heike Goeller Design Affair (BGDA) Fund
Established September 2, 2016, with a gift from Reinhart F.H. Butter; used to support a workshop, roundtable, debate, or lecture by renowned experts within the professional disciplines associated with and/or taught at The Ohio State University Department of Design. The main purpose of the event is the advancement of both theory and practice of design, by engaging the audience in some form of participatory activities.
Department of Design Information Visualization and Interactive Media Fund
Income provides student support, research, education, training, and software acquisition in the area of Interactive Media, User Experience, Usability, Information Design and Motion Graphics.
Scholarships
Sara Jane Pyne Memorial Scholarship
The Sara Jane Pyne Memorial Scholarship was established in 1981 with a bequest from Sara Jane Pyne (BFA, 1941) for scholarships to deserving students in the visual arts and design.
Anthony Byington Art Angel Memorial Fund
The Byington Scholarship is available to Visual Communication Design students, and is funded by the family of alumnus Anthony Byington as a tribute to his memory.
Charles Wallschlaeger Scholarship Fund
The Wallschlaeger Scholarship was established in 1986, with gifts from alumni, faculty, staff, and members of the design community to recognize Charles Wallschlaeger's thirty-three years of service as a Professor, nineteen of those years as Chairperson of the Department of Design. The income from those gifts is awarded to an outstanding undergraduate or graduate design student.
Witherspoon Design Scholarship
Established with an estate gift from Randy Lynn Witherspoon, provides support to students in the Department of Design.

"I would like to start by expressing my appreciation for the scholarship that you have granted me. I am greatly honored to be a recipient of this scholarship and wish to express to you that generosity your will greatly aid my education and career goals. My family and I are incredibly thankful for your support.
As for a little bit about myself, I am a first-year student from the Youngstown area currently in the foundational design program with an interest in interior design. The structure of the design program is built off a first year spent in foundation courses, after which I will apply at the end of the year to get into the design school. I have been set on being an interior designer since 6th grade, so once college application season rolled around, I had no doubt in my mind as to what major I would be perusing. I have a generally creative mind, hence my involvement with the school of arts and sciences here at Ohio State. I utilize my creativity through music, theater, and exploring further into my interest in interior design.
I feel genuine excitement when I think about what is to come as I believe I have set myself on a positive path and I am grateful for the role you now share in it. Also, I included a photo of my family and I; I personally love photos and putting names to faces, so I wanted to be able to do that for you. Again, thank you for your charitable donation to my future."

I am currently in my second year of OSU’s Visual Communications Design program, getting ready for my end-of-year portfolio review with my professors and Design Department faculty members. Serving as a RA also helps me financially while I pursue my degree. My career goal is to become a graphic designer. I would like to produce graphics about varying subjects and aspects of that team. I have always loved how sports can bring people together and how publications can inspire discussion and communication. I intend to combine those two aspects in my future career. I am happy to say that with the support of the scholarship, the Arts and Sciences Scholarship Committee, and my design professor, I am one step closer to achieving my goal, as I will be interning with Sports Illustrated over the 2023 summer."
