Professor Mary Anne Beecher Presents at the Design History Society Conference

Professor Mary Anne Beecher participated recently in the Design History Society Conference, hosted by the University of the Creative Arts in Canterbury, Kent, England. The conference theme was “Border Control: excursion, incursion, and exclusion,” and it invited a broad range of historical perspectives, including Dr. Beecher’s presentation entitled “Anxious Borders: Towards a Transdisciplinary Design History Pedagogy.” She reported on some ways that action and dialogue have been used to address the concerns of persons who teach the history of design in North America; many of whom are anxious about making changes to their curricula. She also enjoyed the ability to explore Canterbury’s Cathedral and the ruins of the St. Augustine’s Abbey as part of the conference, collecting images and details to enhance her teaching about design in the pre-industrial era.
