Students Tour Local Boutique Hotel

Students gathered in hotel lobby

Interior design second-year students embarked on the first project of the semester with a firsthand experience, diving into the design of a boutique hotel lobby. Their design journey began with a visit to The Junto Hotel, which opened this summer in The Peninsula area of Downtown Columbus. The Junto is the first fully independent boutique hotel to open in Columbus and was recently awarded AAA Four Diamond status.

Guided by Jason Delcamp, Managing Director, our students explored the hotel’s inviting public spaces and two guest rooms. He highlighted their desire to invite public into the space, gathering around the large central fireplace to work or relax. He explained the different service goals for guests at the adjacent Little West Tavern restaurant, Maudine’s coffee shop, and rooftop bar Brass Eye

A highlight of the tour was experiencing the design of the 1,100+ square foot “Apartment” suite, built for entertaining, alongside a more traditional guest room. Jason shared insights into their design intent, bringing art from Columbus makers into every space, and their concept for engaging with the local area. He also discussed the technical aspects of hospitality design, such as sound management and the specific functional requirements essential for a positive guest experience.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to Allison Kneubuhl, Acting Director of Sales & Marketing, and Jason Delcamp for their time and enthusiasm to guide students through The Junto’s design. Their insights have provided our students with invaluable firsthand experience, enriching their understanding and preparation for designing their own boutique hotel lobbies.
