Visual Communication Design Students Discover the Art and Science of Origami at Thompson Library

Visual Communication Design students were recently treated to a fascinating display of origami design at the Thompson Library. Led by Dr. Ann Mary Davis, the students were given an introduction to the history of paper and paper folding and learned about the various ways in which origami is used in arts, design, and science.

During the visit, the students had the opportunity to explore the library's collection of origami and paper engineering books, which had been carefully curated by Dr. Davis. The students were also able to try their hand at making their own paper boxes. The highlight of the visit was undoubtedly the chance to view the library's latest acquisition - a rare collection of pop-up teahouses by Nobutatsu Tansai. Dr. Eric Johnson, the Curator of Thompson Special Collections, proudly presented the group with the 65 intricately designed pop-up teahouses, each piece in remarkable condition despite being nearly 200 years old.
