Ohio State Design Launches Cutting-Edge Major in Experiential Media Design
The future of design is here—and it's immersive, interactive, and wildly creative!
The Ohio State University is proud to introduce a groundbreaking new undergraduate major in Experiential Media Design (XMD).
The new major aims to prepare the next generation of professional designers to thrive in the sectors of extended reality, interactive entertainment, immersive media production, exhibitions, and gaming. Students pursuing the XMD major learn how to integrate design principles and gain proficiency in utilizing state-of-the-art immersive media technologies.
“There are currently no design programs in our region that offer this specialized professional path. “We’re equipping our graduates with the skills and expertise that top employers are looking for, both locally and globally,” stated Fabienne Munch, Chair of the Department of Design.
This new major draws on the strengths of the Department of Design’s existing undergraduate programs and offers students a comprehensive first-year design foundation, which equips them with essential skills and tools that apply across all design disciplines. Following this initial year, students will have a chance to apply for a spot in the exclusive XMD cohort, where they will dive into specialized learning with a select group of 18 to 20 students.
Ohio State’s design programs are distinguished by their commitment to socially relevant, research-driven practices that emphasize creativity and collaboration; and XMD shares similarities with the department’s three long-standing successful undergraduate design majors.
