Overview

This course explores the principles, ideas, and practices in the field of information design and data visualization. The class lectures, readings, and projects focus on design strategies of how information can be structured and visualized to create effective communications and stimulate viewer attention and engagement

Objectives

By the end of the semester, students should be able to:
  • Conduct primary research, data collection, data filtering, and data analysis
  • Discern patterns and relationships in small-sized quantified and qualified data with visualization methods (Syllabus DSN 4153 3)
  • Understand the process and practice of how data / information design applies to 2D and 3D print-based mediums and digital mediums
  • Create compelling visual representations of the data and information that tell a good story
  • Familiar with the technological, social, and practical aspects of information design and data visualization from history to the present

Course Organization

This is a 3 credit hour course that meets twice a week for 2:40 each day
