Prerequisite: Admission to Bachelor of Science in Design - Interior Design program; or permission of instructor.

Overview

This is an advanced design course in environmental controls with a focus on the fundamentals and principles of lighting design. As a supplementary course to interior design studios, the purpose of this course is to introduce students to the significance of using light (artificial and natural) as a design element. The course will introduce light as an element of design and provide an introduction into the technical aspect of lighting design. The course will concentrate on the practical and professional application of lighting from conceptual to technical and how lighting layouts work along with other environmental controls (HVAC). Students will also explore the symbolic meaning and psychical effects of light
 

Objectives

The primary objective of this course is to demonstrate the significance of natural and artificial lighting design in interior space
This includes:
  1. Explore how light is utilized as an element of design (CIDA 11a)
  2. Study of the principles of natural and artificial lighting design (CIDA 12b)
  3. Apply the technical and measurable aspects of lighting design (lumens, foot-candles, etc.) and light source selection (CIDA 12c)

Course Organization

This is an online 3 credit hour course that meets for 1:20 twice a week
