MFA Scholar Yeoleum Choi Awarded Scholarship and International Recognition for Animation "Layers In History"

Yeoleum Choi, a second-year student in the Department of Design’s MFA program in the Digital Animation and Interactive Media (DAIM) track, has been selected as one of the Awarded Artists for the 34th Annual Edith Fergus Gilmore Scholarship Exhibition, earning a $1,000 scholarship in recognition of outstanding creative achievement.

Choi’s animated work, Layers In History, will be exhibited at the Hopkins Hall Urban Arts Center as part of the scholarship exhibition. The piece explores historical narratives through layered visual storytelling and has drawn significant attention for its distinctive style and thoughtful production process.

In addition to the scholarship honor, Layers In History was recently curated as a “Best of Behance” project on Behance, Adobe’s global online platform for showcasing creative work—an achievement that places Choi’s animation among a highly selective group of projects recognized for exceptional quality and innovation.

The growing interest in the project has also led to international engagement. This month, Choi was invited to present a seminar at a design academy in South Korea, where they spoke about the planning, design, and production process behind Layers In History. Demand for the seminar was so high that all tickets sold out within 10 seconds of release. The event attracted a large audience of beginner designers, 3D motion graphics artists, and character animators eager to learn from Choi’s workflow and creative approach.

More information about Layers In History, including an introduction to the animation and production visuals, can be found on Behance.

Choi’s recent achievements highlight the growing impact of DAIM students on both national and international creative platforms, reflecting the strength of the program and its emphasis on professional-level production and conceptual development. Congratulations Yeoleum!
