Exploring the Boundaries of Creativity with Generative AI
Wrapping up the final week of this spring semester’s Introduction to Visual Communication Design II course, instructor Peter Chan orchestrated an exploratory workshop centered around AI-generated content. The session, held on Friday, April 19, unfolded at the state-of-the-art Emerging Technology Studio (ETS) situated in 180 Hopkins Hall.
Kicking off with an engaging Adobe FireFly demonstration by Michael Hardesty, the ETS director, the workshop seamlessly transitioned into collaborative endeavors by Visual Communication Design year-two students. Seven teams, comprising three students and a guest each, explored the innovative realm of AI-generated visual imagery. Guided by a series of prompts focusing on visual narrative and composition design, like those used in their ongoing PhotoGraphic Project titled “Journey Towards Wellbeing: Exploring the Emotional Landscape of Driving to Campus,” the participants embraced the novel process with enthusiasm. This approach facilitated a creative integration of their existing project work into the exploration of AI-generated content, sparking excitement and imagination.
The workshop concluded with a reflective group discussion on the new horizons and concerns surrounding the expression of unique perspectives and emotions in human creativity and authenticity. It was a stimulating exploration of the intersection between technology and visual communication.
