Jammies Day Out

Enough of the clothing we own seems to be treated as easily replaceable. We buy an article of clothing only to wear it a couple times and just like that, it gets thrown out or shoved into the depths of our closet. The current way clothing is being made and worn is extremely wasteful and contributes to the increasing issue of overconsumption occurring in the clothing industry. While several factors contribute to this issue, one that often gets overlooked is the failure to design clothing with a focus on adding value; that is, expanding the versatility of an item. Pajamas are a prime example of this issue, as traditionally, they are only worn at home. Their casual patterns - characters, animal, or cartoon patterns, make it difficult to be worn anywhere else. Pattern plays a huge role in how clothing is worn because it is what differentiates an article of clothing from being worn in a dressy or casual manner. When a pattern strongly leans towards the casual side of the spectrum it limits the versatility of an item, decreasing the value of the product. All of the effort, energy, and resources that go into making one singular pajama piece can be maximized through the application of the right pattern.
