Artelier: an Art as Therapy Toolkit

Artelier is a culturally sensitive, self-guided art therapy toolkit for adolescents that integrates mindfulness practices and creative activities to help them explore and shape their cultural identity. Rooted in extensive research, this project draws from primary sources such as interviews with art therapists and educators, as well as secondary sources, including literature on art therapy, mindfulness, and adolescent development. By analyzing user personas and conducting media scans, I identified key challenges young people face, particularly regarding cultural identity and emotional well-being.

The design process was highly intentional, from selecting activities that encourage self-reflection to creating a cohesive brand identity that feels inviting and accessible to teenagers. Each component of the toolkit; such as the reflection journal, sketchbook, and guided directives, was carefully crafted to foster personal growth in a low-pressure, supportive way.

While Artelier is not a replacement for professional therapy, it serves as a valuable tool for self-exploration and creative healing. It offers structured prompts and materials that guide users through therapeutic techniques at their own pace. The project also extends beyond the physical toolkit, with a website, promotional materials, and an explanatory video that communicate its purpose and benefits. Through this initiative, I hope to make art therapy-inspired practices more accessible, helping young people find connection, comfort, and clarity through creativity.
