The Frunk Changing Table

Partnering with Honda Research and Development to design for the new front trunk (or "frunk") space in electric vehicles, I designed the Frunk Changing Table. After my initial research about how women fit into (or rather, don’t fit into) car culture and car design, I noticed a gap in the market caused by years of masculine marketing the pickup truck as an independent working man’s truck. My design is meant to turn the pickup truck into a family vehicle. By marketing pickup truck accessories toward parents, Honda would be increasing the number of women that buy trucks and show their electric pickup as something more versatile than the competitors.

The design is a foldable changing table mounted to the back wall of the frunk and can be easily unfolded with one hand for use. There are safety straps for securing a baby, and the articulated arm supporting the table would be like an adjustable computer monitor arm, able to hold enough weight and stay in the place the parent needs it to be. The interior surface of the frunk would be waterproof and easily cleanable, and there would be modular sliding storage for wipes and other essentials on the side walls of the frunk. Finally, parents could add a touch of personalization by adding the baby’s favorite toy or mobile to the hook on the underside of the frunk hood.

My name is Brett, and I’m a senior industrial design major. After graduation, I’m interested in possibly going into designing toys and other children’s products, furniture and lightingproducts, home goods, or apparel and accessories. Some of my favorite things are fashion dolls, watching and discussing film with friends, and crafting for fun (instead of for school).
