Natural disaster shelters are a high stress environment, where people have very little personal space. With very little space, and floor mats and cots being uneasy to fold up or store away, many victims end up staying on their sleeping space the entire day and night. This makes their sleeping space become very unsanitary.

Compack is a natural disaster relief product that would be distributed in a disaster shelter. It is a sleeping mat that folds up into a bookbag with ease. It also has 2 detachable pockets that stores a first aid kit and a pillow. The mat being easy to fold up, allows users to fold up and store away their sleeping mat during the day, allowing users to use their given space for other activities. The goal of Compack is to help improve disaster victims’ living condition and experience in a shelter.

Daiga Shinohara is a fourth year OSU student pursuing an Industrial Design major and Psychology minor. Growing up, Daiga always had a strong passion for art from a young age. In high school, he discovered industrial design from his parents’ suggestion and found it a perfect career where he can apply his creativity to the real world. After graduation, Daiga is planning to move back to his hometown, Tokyo, to explore how the design knowledge he gained here at OSU can be applied in other parts of the world.
