Customs: A Cultural Dining Experience

Customs: A Cultural Dining Experience

Dalay Ket

Interior Design, 2014

Southeast Asian restaurants are frequently categorized with other Asian restaurants. They have a very stereotypical look and feel that often does not reflect the area's rich culture and traditions. Many people find themselves asking, "What is Southeast Asia? Thailand, Cambodia? Where is that even at?"

Customs aims to exhibit Southeast Asian culture. It is a restaurant within a restaurant. The main dining area, as well as the bar, translates modern day Southeast Asia. The transitional dining space, located in the middle of the restaurant, shows traditional Southeast Asia. The transitional space changes every few months to reflect different festivals.

Customs is designed to serve as an educational environment that spreads cultural awareness and evokes thoughtful conservation.
