SideQuest: Concept and Artwork VOL2. This is a 3D mockup of the printed manual that would detail the creative development of the project. Starting with early sketches of enemies, characters, items, and the different concept art depicting various locations players could discover when playing.
SideQuest: Research Manual VOL1. This is a mockup of the printed manual that would detail the origins and research of SideQuest. Starting with a brief explanation of ADHD, it examines the research used to design the game and the mechanics.
Home screen and Quest screen. The home screen is where you can complete quests, add new ones, and navigate the game. The Quest screen shows you the current quest your looking at and what rewards you will get for completion.
Task Creation screen and Game Interface. Task Creation allows you to add or write your own Quests to complete. The Game Interface is where you navigate dungeons, slay enemies, and equip items to solve puzzles.
Item Artwork. The Concept and Artwork manual would feature official artwork of in-game items, merchants, as well as early work. SideQuest features a variety of of weapons and tools to get the job done such as swords, shields, magical rods, and many more.
Bosses. SideQuest’s dungeons are filled with enemies, their origins unknown. You can conquer dungeons and slay the bosses that dwell within, often rewarding you with unique items and gear that helps you on your journey. Beware! More power invites more challenge.
Icons. The game uses icons designed from the typeface used in SideQuest. These icons were created by dissecting the typeface and using the forms and curves to create a set of icons that feel unified and retro.
SideQuest: A Fantasy-Focused Adventure Game
SideQuest is a unique mobile game that offers a novel approach to gaming. Unlike traditional games that progress solely within the virtual world, SideQuest rewards players for completing real-life tasks. This innovative concept is based on research conducted on ADHD, aiming to provide an immersive and engaging gaming experience that enhances executive functions, improves motivation, focus, and task management skills. Inspired by classic games like The Legend of Zelda, Pokémon GO, and Animal Crossing, SideQuest is designed to serve as a versatile companion app. It helps users keep track of upcoming projects, meetings, and simple reminders, providing a convenient way to stay organized. The app also offers auto-suggestions to keep players engaged throughout the day, encouraging them to complete tasks and progress. Upon completing their “Quests,” players are rewarded with in-game currency and items that can be equipped and utilized against formidable enemies and formidable bosses. The game offers both solo and multiplayer modes, allowing players to explore the world and uncover hidden dungeons and secret merchants.
Dawson is a Visual Communication Designer. He interns at Urban Arts Space and Columbus nonprofit Neighborhood Design Center. He’s a huge fan of Spider-Man and The Legend of Zelda, and he’s all about old-school tech. Dawson believes if you have the power to help, you have a duty to. He hopes to use design and his love for others to do just that.
