Piece By Piece Learning Center

Piece by Piece Learning Center transforms a neglected building in Franklinton into a vibrant after-school learning center for 6th to 12th graders. Franklinton has faced long-term challenges, including high crime rates, low-income levels, and population loss. In the 2022–2023 school year, Franklinton schools experienced a chronic absenteeism rate of 81.9%, with students with disabilities facing even higher rates. Test scores in the area consistently fall far below the state average, further highlighting the critical need for enhanced educational support. This project will contribute to that renewal by providing a “home outside the home,” offering a safe, supportive space where students can grow academically, socially, and personally.

Inspired by the concept of a puzzle, the center features adaptable spaces tailored to diverse learning styles, empowering students to take charge of their learning through group collaboration, hands-on activities, and individual work. A dedicated support center offers resources for students and parents to explore learning strategies together, with personalized guidance from tutors.

Teens in Franklinton often spend their after-school hours participating in extracurricular activities like team sports and local youth programs, but these spaces are often overcrowded and lack the resources to fully meet their needs. This project builds on these programs by collaborating with local schools and organizations to address critical gaps in the educational support system. By doing so, Piece by Piece Learning Center will help shape the Franklinton community, creating a space where every student is an important piece of the whole.
