Pulse: Anti-Seizure Implant that brings comfort through nerve stimulation
An oversight exists within the medical treatments for epilepsy. Epilepsy is a serious life-threatening condition. Through research and patient interviews, the overall attitude towards the main current treatment method, medication, lacks effectiveness and safety, leaving epileptics in discomfort and at a loss of control of their lives. A solution is necessary for this community to gain independence and comfort back to their lives. The PULSE Anti-Seizure Implant prevents, regulates, and disrupts seizures with electrode stimulation through the nervous system. Placed on both sides of the neck, the implant is inserted under the skin above the carotid artery and vagus nerve. Seizure activity can be detected by sensing distinctive heart rate patterns through the artery. The activity can be prevented or disrupted by stimulation pulses that travel through the nerve to the brain. PULSE gives independence back to people with epilepsy. This innovative treatment method is medication-free and only requires a minimally invasive procedure to implant. The comfort of seizure control and autonomy is achieved through this device no bigger than your house key.

Hello, I’m Emma Bergman and I am a senior graduating in Industrial Design and minoring in Studio Art. I am passionate about designing products with high levels of functionality and craftsmanship. I find myself most excited about the tactile parts of design as I love to woodwork, product and idea sketch, and prototype. Outside of design, I love to be outdoors, weight-lift, snuggle my dog, and play soccer.
