Franklinton, Ohio—An area rich in history and richer in culture located just outside of downtown Columbus. Many of its residents have called Franklinton home for years, and even generations. That said, the area’s low-lying geographic features, separation from the city, and gentrification have forced many economic and social hardships on the community both old and new.
One sector of this community that has been particularly challenged is single mothers and their children. Today, fifty-five percent of Franklinton households are comprised of single mothers with children under six years of age. Franklinton does not have the transportation resources, job opportunities, or affordable childcare to properly support these families. These mothers need a community within Franklinton of other women just like them. A community that is supportive, safe, and accessible on all accounts.
Empow(her) is a training and childcare facility for Franklinton area single mothers and their children. Within this close-knit community, moms are encouraged, educated, and empowered to lead successful, confident lives all while being excellent role models to their children.
