Food Pantry Service Design

Industrial Design, 2021
Food insecurity increased in Franklin County by an estimated 36% (Feeding America 2020). Additionally, most food pantries were forced to drastically revise their storage and distribution systems in order to follow safety precautions. For this project, I partnered with the Bishop Griffin Resource Center (BGRC) to design a new service that improves the experience for both the volunteers and clients during this pandemic. Although we were unable to implement the final design due to space constraints, we did implement a new system that offers clients their choice of meat. I volunteered over 60 hours with BGRC during this project and am proud of our partnership which emphasized reciprocity and sustainability.

August Majtenyi is an engaging and reflective designer that loves questions. When curious about surface level events, he seldom gets embarrassed by his lack of knowledge. When inquiring about deeper ideas, he aims to challenge the perspectives of his peers. He recognizes the key role that questions have facilitating the design process, and he believes that more of them can contribute to a better world. What do you think?
