Hive-A Makerspace Management System

Hive-A Makerspace Management System

Benjamin Mosher

Industrial Design, 2021

Hive is a makerspace management system designed to optimize efficiency, organization, and access for both student users and facility administrators alike. Makerspaces are found in nearly every higher education institution around the globe, and have become a widespread form of workspace for people to build, create, prototype and learn. Within the scope of this project, makerspaces are defined as anything from woodshops to fablabs to vocational school classrooms.

The hive digital ecosystem consists of a mobile app and the hive HQ device, a tablet designed to act as both a check-in point for students and a management hub for facility staff. Through intelligently intuitive management tools, help-seeking resources, safety features and equipment tracking, the hive system seeks to improve the experience of both the students, and the facility instructors operating within shared-use makerspaces.

Benjamin Mosher

Benjamin Mosher’s outlook on design stems from an appreciation for the people, places, things and ideas that inspire passion in himself and others. He feels the most fulfilled when taking on new hobbies and learning new skills. Looking ahead, Ben hopes to learn as much as he can while he’s young, in order to design with consideration and appreciation at the core of his life’s work.

Ben would like to acknowledge gratitude for his grandfather James Mosher as a transformative figure in his life.
