Hueplay is an in-browser game designed to teach designers the principles of web accessibility and ADA compliance. The ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) was passed by Congress in 1990 to protect the rights of people with disabilities. In recent years, there has been a marked increase in lawsuits towards companies and universities because of their lack of ADA accessible websites.
Many designers hold disdain for ADA compliance as they feel it undermines their designs. Hueplay is designed to make learning ADA compliance effortless. Through the principles of gamification, designers can acquire design solutions as they defeat monsters and free Hueplay’s inhabitants.
Each level of Hueplay is designed around a specific disability: the boss in each level is a personification of bad design choices and presents the designer with an example of non-compliant design. When the designer defeats the boss, he or she leaves with an impression of what bad design looks like in the context of that disability, and with helpful advice about how to avoid such designs. The designer can always learn more through Hueplay’s built-in learning section on each featured disability.
