Green Roots Market: Innovating Food Systems for Urban Sustainability in Franklinton

Food access is vital for health, longevity, and sustainability, yet areas like Franklinton are considered food deserts, where residents face limited access to healthy, affordable food. With a median household income of $29,267—well below the urban area's median of $54,296—and a poverty rate of 37.7%, Franklinton is especially vulnerable to food insecurity. While some markets exist, most are convenience
stores offering few healthy options.

To address this, I propose Green Roots Market, a community-centered space providing fresh, locally grown produce while empowering residents through education in gardening and sustainability. The space will serve as an inviting hub where people gather to engage in activities like gardening and workshops, fostering community connections. The design seamlessly blends urban life with agricultural elements, creating a unique fusion of market and garden.

At its heart, the central greenhouse offers visitors the opportunity to witness the growth process firsthand, deepening their connection to the origins of their food. The greenhouse is surrounded by the market, symbolizing the cycle of growth and sustainability. Produce from the greenhouse will be integrated into a farm-to-table model, offering fresh, locally grown options directly to the community.

The market will also implement a circular grocery system, offering incentives like discounts for recycling and educational participation, food donation opportunities, and affordable pricing to support low- income families. With sustainable technologies such as solar panels and rainwater harvesting, Green Roots promotes environmental responsibility and resilience. By prioritizing sustainability and equitable access to fresh food, Green Roots strengthens community well-being and combats food insecurity.
