Oasis Market and Community Kitchen
Heather Schrand
Interior Design, 2015
A holistic community hub for residents in the food desert of Franklinton, Ohio. This unique concept includes a healthy food market, featuring locally grown and affordable foods, plus an educational community kitchen. Residents benefit from its convenient location, affordability, and educational experience. For customers paying with SNAP, their EBT cards extend twice as far as cash. The dynamic interior of the space differentiate it from other convenience stores in the area, while making it a special experience for all members of the community. The Community Kitchen, located on the second floor, is a much needed amenity in the neighborhood and serves as an educational resource for residents. My research indicates that family meals can contribute to a healthier lifestyle, and in turn, dramatically reduce the obesity statistics in children. By having this resource in the community, it allows families to have a meal together as many times as they'd like. The kitchens are fully equipped and re-servable. The menu would be prepared by a licensed dietitian, which could work as a partnership with Mount Carmel Hospital nearby.
