The Fisher College of Business, Dean Speaker Series presents Dr. Gary D. Anderson, PhD, AIA, FAICP, LEED AP. His lecture is “Understanding the History of the Recycling Symbol.”
Attendees will gain insight into the origins and design process of the recycling symbol, learning how Gary Anderson developed this globally recognized icon as a student and the impact it has had on environmental sustainability efforts.

Gary D. Anderson, PhD, AIA, FAICP, LEED AP is a retired architect and planner, who is most widely known as the designer of the international recycling symbol, recognized worldwide as designating products that are recycled or recyclable. He continues to promote recycling and sustainability and has spoken to various public interest groups and institutions, including the Aspen Institute, and the National Recycling Coalition.
As a private sector professional, he was the program manager on numerous multi-million-dollar indefinite delivery contracts providing planning services to Federal agencies for projects in Germany, Belgium, Italy, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and the UK, as well as in the United States. Many of these projects included facility planning, life-cycle cost analyses, sustainable design and planning for LEED certification, and cost estimating for federal program budgeting. He retired as a contracted Senior Planner at the Defense Health Agency, where his responsibilities included project development, market-wide planning, and location analysis for medical facilities in the US and Europe.
Dr Anderson held various leadership positions in private sector architecture and engineering consulting firms, including that of vice president and head of Federal Installation Planning at STV, Inc (1985-2006) and regional director of planning, GTCS, Inc (2009-12). Dr Anderson has also taught at the university and post graduate level, including at the Carey School of Business at The Johns Hopkins University and the College of Architecture and Planning at King Faisal University, Dammam, Saudi Arabia, where he was also the acting chair of the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. He has guest lectured at Clemson University Daniel Center, Genoa, Italy; Istanbul Technical University, Istanbul, Turkey; and Helsinki University of Technology, Espoo, Finland.
Dr Anderson received his PhD from the Department of Geography and Environmental Engineering at the Whiting School of Engineering of the Johns Hopkins University. He earned a 'diplom' (master’s degree) in Social Science from the University of Stockholm, Sweden, and degrees in Urban Design and Architecture from the University of Southern California.
Dr Anderson is a Fellow of the American Institute of Certified Planners (FAICP) and a Fellow of the Society of American Military Engineers (FSAME). He was named a Fulbright Senior Scholar in Architecture and Planning in 2006, by the US Department of State.
