Ohio State’s Department of Design and Leadership Major Program Announce Strategic Partnership

The Ohio State University’s Department of Design and the Leadership Major program in the College of Arts and Sciences are excited to announce a new academic partnership that brings the principles of design thinking into the heart of leadership education.

This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to preparing students for the complex challenges of today’s professional landscape; where innovation, empathy, and strategic decision-making are essential. By integrating design thinking into the Leadership curriculum, students will gain tools to approach problems creatively, foster collaboration across diverse perspectives, and lead with purpose.

“Designers are uniquely equipped to navigate ambiguity, guide interdisciplinary teams, and shape solutions that are both impactful and inclusive,” said Fabienne Munch, Chair of the Department of Design. “Bringing these capabilities into the Leadership Major expands how students think about influence, vision, and responsibility.”

The Leadership Major, housed in the College of Arts and Sciences, prepares students to lead in a variety of fields—from business and public service to nonprofit and community organizations. Through this partnership, students will explore how design methodologies—such as human-centered research, iterative problem-solving, and systems thinking—can enhance their ability to lead with clarity and compassion.

"What makes the Leadership Major unique for Leadership Programs is that it is steeped in the liberal arts. Importantly, we are critically focused on teaching future leaders how to become better thinkers,” said Christa Johnson, Associate Director of the Leadership Major. "What makes this collaboration so exciting and impactful is that these Design courses are able to be the bridge between our students developing these thinking skills in theory and putting them into practice."

The Department of Design and the Leadership Major program look forward to co-developing coursework, events, and experiential learning opportunities that highlight the intersection of design and leadership.
