Student Feature: Isabel Nixon
Isabel Nixon is a fourth-year student in the Visual Communication Design program at Ohio State. With minors in Computer Science and Creative Writing, her work spans across multiple fields, both creative and analytical.
Bel began her internship work as an exhibition design intern for a professor, then worked to create research materials for the Sustainability Institute on campus. She was then selected by IBM to participate in IBM Accelerate, a career readiness and research program, on the design track.
She has also participated in the Undergraduate Research Apprenticeship Program, where she learned to code in JavaScript to create a web experience about the impact of technology during the Information Era. Many of her projects in design have a development component as well, demonstrating the bridge between the two fields.
In 2024, Bel traveled to San Francisco for Figma’s Config, a conference for designers focusing on UX. She learned so much from this experience that she traveled to Pittsburgh this fall to attend the Brand New conference with some of her classmates, sponsored by the Department of Design.
“It’s one of the best ways to learn a lot from the best people all at once,” she explains, “really immersing yourself in a new place surrounded by people who love the same thing you do is such a rewarding experience. I’m always grateful to the department for allowing me to go on these trips!”
Bel then interned for Ohio State Athletics before being offered an internship at Between State, a brand and design agency in Clintonville, in the summer of 2025. There, she works with various local and national clients spanning different fields, completing UX, motion, and graphics projects.
She is currently working on her senior capstone project, a system of designs called Offline, which works to combat addiction to social media and mobile technology.
