Entitled
Kate Noel
Visual Communication Design, 2015
Entitled is a title sequence design study meant to precede a “new” and darker Charlie and the Chocolate Factory movie. The movie is completely fictitious and should not be confused with any Charlie movie in the market already.
Title sequences are the opening credits that precede a film. At their most basic function, they signal a movie’s start while conveying critical pieces of information about the film. Sequences have moved beyond this, and now can set a mood, tell a story, and create a world all before a movie has really even begun.
The fictitious movie portrays Roald Dahl’s classic in a new way, highlighting the darker themes hiding beneath the sugary sweet façade of a story about a chocolate factory. Meant to precede the film, the sequence foreshadows what will befall the children later due to their glaring character flaws. Willy Wonka is represented minimally, to increase the mystery and tension surrounding his role in the story, transforming him from zany benefactor to a more ominous and omniscient character, meant to punish rather than reward.
A Columbus native, Kate Noel was drawn to Visual Design due to its story-telling capabilities and its user-centered nature. As a long time creative writer, she tries to imbue every design with a compelling narrative, believing a message is only as powerful as one’s ability to share it. Kate feels that a strong story can make a design more engaging and empathetic, connecting with users on a deeper level.
In addition to design, Kate is fond of any and all movies, good short stories, travel to new places, nice pens, and interesting trivia.
