Ohio State Design undergraduate researchers win awards at 2023 Denman Undergraduate Research Forum

l-r: Madyson Webb, Ashland Damron, Annie Roo

The Department of Design congratulates the undergraduate researchers who received awards at the 2023 Richard J. and Martha D. Denman Undergraduate Research Forum. The 28th annual Denman Undergraduate Research Forum was held on Tuesday, March 7, 2023 in Pomerene Hall and featured over 200 student presenters.

The Denman Forum provides an opportunity for graduating student researchers to share their research endeavors with the broader community.  This is Ohio State's only competitive poster forum in which winners are recognized in each category as determined by faculty, staff, and Denman alumni reviewers. Students are reviewed on their ability to communicate their research process and results effectively in both their written poster content and accompanying oral presentation.  During the Denman Forum, the university community celebrates not only the hard work of these students, but also the dedication of their faculty research mentors.

“Get Back to Green”: Understanding and improving the education on the process of emotion regulation for children ages 5 to 7.

The purpose of my research was to understand and improve education on the process of emotion regulation for students ages 5 to 7. In my research I learned that there is a lack of engaging and educational resources to aid teachers in teaching this topic. The results of my research led me to create a children’s book that not only showed the journey of a character facing and overcoming difficult emotions, but also showed the students how to properly exercise healthy coping mechanisms. These coping mechanisms in the storybook were brought to life as animations in augmented reality, for students to follow along. This supplies students with a toolkit to be able to properly practice the coping mechanisms they are learning, in order for their education on this topic to be most effective.

Ashland Damron will be graduating in May of 2023, earning her Bachelor of Science in Design with Research Distinction in Visual Communication Design.

“Enabling Professional Intervention Points for the Process of Stroke Rehabilitation.”

This research explored the stroke rehabilitation and recovery process to identify the benefits and medium in which professional intervention can be applied and be evenly distributed throughout the entire timeline not just within the first few weeks.  Utilizing the Battelle Neurolife sleeve as its basis of operation, a digital rehabilitation system—Replay—was designed as a gamified rehabilitation program that would engage users in occupational therapy through play in the form of hobbies and activities of daily living.

Annie Roo will be graduating in May of 2024, earning her Bachelor of Science in Design with Research Distinction in Industrial Design, her Bachelors of Science in Electrical Engineering, and her Business Minor.

"Grocery Service Vehicle Improvement App"

This project was a partnership project with HONDA, investigating how to increase competitiveness with their next-gen vehicles by observing future grocery shopping trends and redesigning the cars' assistive aspects to improve this experience during grocery store pick-up. This app is a digitalized feature implemented in the vehicles hub center to promote the importance of future vehicle development and online shopping means. The app encourages engagement between the user and the fulfillment workers to improve communication of the online shopping process and allows the user to easily shop without leaving their car during the typical grocery shopping experience.

Madyson Webb will graduate in May of 2023, earning her Bachelor of Science in Design with Research Distinction in Industrial Design.
