Student leaders for the Ohio State chapter of the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) realized a major goal to facilitate a design field trip during Spring Break, a pre-COVID tradition. This year’s destination was Chicago, a city known worldwide as a hub for design, architecture, and the arts. From March 14–17, thirty‑five students from across Ohio State Design’s major programs traveled together to explore the city, connect with industry professionals, and engage in hands-on educational experiences beyond the classroom.

The Spring Break Field Trip was funded through IDSA’s past initiatives including Winter Market, online fundraiser , on-campus bake sales, and additional support from Ohio State Design. IDSA used the funds raised to pay for student accommodation and major activities.

The students arrived in Chicago and began their weekend with a tour of the Frank Lloyd Wright Home and Studio, an experience that connected historical context with both design and architecture while allowing them to observe Wright’s lasting influence on future practices.

The group then visited Radio Flyer, where they explored product development processes, the brand’s evolution, and company culture while on a studio tour. Students saw a piece of American design history and how the brand has grown into the 21st century. Special thanks to Radio Flyer design team members Collin Ostergaard, Steve Martise, and Anne Goodman for hosting the group. (Check out the studio tour: Here)

Another highlight of the trip was a MillerKnoll showroom tour, where students explored five floors of contemporary furniture, and featured materials, manufacturing methods, and marketing strategies throughout MillerKnoll’s history. We extend our gratitude to Ohio State Design’s Department Chairperson Fabienne Munch for making this experience possible.

The weekend concluded with a Chicago River architecture boat tour, generously funded by Ohio State Design Advisory Board member Renee Hytry Derrington. In addition to planned activities, students also got to really enjoy the city. Students watched the Chicago River turn green for St. Patrick’s Day, wandered through Chinatown, stopped by “The Bean”, hopped on the “L,” explored different neighborhoods, checked out other museums, and tried new foods that made the trip even more memorable.

This trip would not have been possible without the support and generosity of many individuals and organizations. We extend our sincere thanks to: IDSA OSU Board, MillerKnoll, Radio Flyer, Frank Lloyd Wright Museum, OSU Department of Design, all students who participated, and donors/supporters who contributed to fundraising efforts.

Students are already excited to plan next year’s Spring field trip!
